Don Henley - Never Look Back!

Listening today to my favourite album of the immortal Don Henley, these lyrics from his classic “Boys of Summer” struck me.

“A voice inside my head said don't look back - you can never look back”

It’s been so true in my career and indeed my life.

Good memories are priceless and wonderful - we must cherish them … BUT sometimes I think looking back can be a negative thing because we may be hankering for something good that will not happen again – it’s gone - finished – history.

We have to learn from our experiences and then look at today and the future as far as I’m concerned.

I’d always rather be saying ‘what might be’ than ‘what might have been’

“Never look back” – co-incidentally Don Henley’s words are also appropriate today for Fabio Capello.

Trevor, the Eagles were in town last night with the Dixie Chicks opening. I didn't see the show, but I'm sure it was grand. (Actually, I haven't seen them live since their first few gigs in W. Hollywood in late 1971.) I liked them best in the 1975-1979 period when Don Felder shined. But Henley's voice was always a big part of their success.

They are still brilliant ‘live’ John – I’ve seen them three times in the last four years over here - after waiting 30 years to see them!

I’ve always loved Henley’s whole rebellious attitude – he is your classic angry young (old) man. Actually I imagine there is a warm human being behind that often brusque looking individual. It’s his image and I guess that image will not change now. He is a campaigner for many good causes for the underdog.

Hi Trevor & John

First the Eagles have gone Corporate - suits no less. Looking back to when they were a rock band is a good thing for me.

Second this was a live performance in my town - Melbourne Australia - in the Rod Laver Arena (yeah where they play the Australian Open Final). It is great venue for a modern concert where everyone is moving around, texting each other, on the phone most of the time in fact, and I saw some locals digging the music too (fancy that!).

Switching gears. Just saw Australia totally humiliated by Germany 4-0 at Soccer World Cup. All my family and a young friend who is up and coming professional soccer player watch this debacle. We all agree that Australia should be banned from the Soccer World Cup for 10 years or until they learn to play the game (play like Korea would be good).

England have Stevie Gerrard - thank your lucky stars! I know I am a biased Liverpool fan but, if he is not one of the top five best players in the world then I know even less about playing Soccer than the Australian Soccer Team. Go Stevie, show the whole world just how good you are. His crosses from the right wing were low hard and deadly and his goal was just Gerrard elegance. As for your man in goals - wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more.

Have a great day. I did enjoy seeing and hearing the Eagles.

Hi Richard - re-inventing themselves has been an Eagles trait over the last 30 years. They are still brilliant live and that Melbourne concert is legendary. There was a lot of footage published from that one in their world tour in 08.

Bad luck to the Aussies tonight - Germany looked very good. It’s still early days and England will pick up I'm sure!

Don Henley's best song (apart from The Last Resort is The End of the Innocence which reads like an obituary for New Labour:

They're beating plowshares into swords
For this tired old man that we elected king
Armchair warriors often fail
And we've been poisoned by those fairy tales

Don Henley gave a great performance with that song. He is the ultimate rock voice, always challenging us, since we have lost John Lennon.

I like his song New York Minute. That speaks to me. Thanks for posting the video--I enjoyed it!

Mark - agree entirely - my favourite track of Henley is The Last Resort followed closely by The End of Innocence - he is simply brilliant.

Thanks Marilyn- Henley is a real cage rattler with a beautiful voice. New York Minute is another Henley classic - tragic story of ‘Harry’ captured poignantly.

I made the mistake of looking back in trying to play the video, Trevor! It's already been yanked for copyright!

Oh, well, looking forward to our mutual opponent - what think of you Slovenia's chances? Bear in mind that my wife's mom was a native born Slovene, so be the polite gent that you always are!

Trevor Gay said...

Sorry about that Dick – I’ll try and reload another version. Slovenia are no pushover but I think England should beat them and I also fancy the US team to win too. It would be great if England and the US both go through to the next round. Best wishes to your mother in law – I hope she will forgive me!
