Memo to All 1.3 million NHS staff!

As a follow up to the Ricardo Semler posting this is a copy of a slide I use in all my talks on healthcare. This says it all - simplicity and a wonderful reminder to all staff in the NHS why they are employed.

Trevor when I was 21 years old I was traveling through India - I got very sick.... I flew to Bombay ( as it was called then) I went to the Hospital - before I could blink I was operated upon for acute appendicitis. I was extremely lucky the thing did not burst...

I had the very best British trained doctors I could have found anywhere in the world... The Indian nurses were just fantastic they gave me the best quality patient care I have ever received...

But I was a relatively rich Western dude not a normal Indian who needed patient care - I have no idea just how good or bad their treatment was in that very same institution. But given the caste system in operation then in India I would not bet a lot of money that it was very good at all.

Universal health care delivery to one billion people to that standard was not feasible. Is it today? I do not know the answer. I suspect that the increasing standard of living in India makes it easier in some areas and more difficult in others.

Delivering the same quality of health care to every one in a Taxpayer funded system is a huge challenge. I believe it is one of the most pressing challenges for C21st management.

Thanks Richard - an enlightening story and a great example of the Gandhi ethos of caring.
