Einstein on Capitalism and Socialism

Albert Einstein of course was not commenting on Britain in 2011 but he could have been. This was the great man writing in his book “Why Socialism?” in 1949 just 6 years from the end of his illustrious and iconic life. Here is Einstein’s argument against what he calls the grave evils of Capitalism: “I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils [capitalism], namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals. In such an economy, the means of production are owned by society itself and are utilized in a planned fashion. A planned economy, which adjusts production to the needs of the community, would distribute the work to be done among all those able to work and would guarantee a livelihood to every man, woman, and child. The education of the individual, in addition to promoting his own innate abilities, would attempt to develop in him a sense of responsibility for his fellow men in place of the glorification of power and success in our present society.” Thanks - I’m with you Albert!

Hi Trevor,

While 'am also in totality with Einstein on Socialism...........I think it(Socialism & Capitalsm) can be compared with his own words on Theory of Relativity goes.........

“Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute."........and THAT'S relativity.”............The former is Capitalism while the ,latter is Socialism...........that's how I compare

If you differ with my views pl let me know Sir.

If I remember correctly, that was the utopian ideal behind socialist Russia. Now, just remind me, how well did that do for the people of Russia...?

Here's another quote: "A young man who isn't a socialist hasn't got a heart; an old man who is a socialist hasn't got a head." It was said by David Lloyd George, whose political career includes The Education Act of 1911, doubling pensions, legislation that lead to the building of 170,000 council homes, reforms to National Insurance and The People's Budget of 1909 which is generally seen as laying the foundations of the welfare state.

Whilst their views are interesting, I put more trust in Einstein on physics and Lloyd George on politics than the other way round.

I recall you and I have had this discussion before Mark and it’s always great to have the discussion.

Even though I am now really old I would still rather stick with socialist principles than capitalist principles.

The lust for power and the search for individual greed always takes over from political principles whether socialism or capitalism. I feel much safer in a socialism model when it comes to those people worst off in our society than I do in a capitalist model. Capitalist fans laughingly argue that wealth will trickle down to poorer folks if we just ‘leave’ the market to dictate …..

Shall we ask the bankers and city finance folks how much of their money they allowed to ‘trickle down’ to the poor from the 35 BILLION dollars paid to them in bonuses on Wall Street in 2010?

Russia wasnt socialist. Socialism in Russia was destroyed by Western terrorist support of the monachs and white rebels during the Russian Civil war.

Mark, I think you should also have to ask another question. How were Russians before socialist revolution. i would say they were in very dare straits. Vast majority was dirt poor and worked like slaves.
However I do not think that what we had in the former USSR was a socialism. However, for majority of working people this kind of planned economy is far better than what is presented as capitalism now. I would put it simple. One has to give his arm and leg to have what people in the former USSR had for free:" Free housing, free health care, free day care, schools, trade schools, colleges and universities, guaranteed employment with living salary, guaranteed pension upon retirement, free or token utilities and house maintenance and phones, extremely cheap and good public transportation including planes and trains, annual paid monthly vacation with free hotel accommodation coming with medical attention at Soviet resorts and on and on and on"
try to translate in how much it cost in the West all free things and also cheap organic food in stores.
